The Amazon Day: Time to Promote Sustainability
This September 5th, Brazil celebrates one of its main and richest biomes: the Amazon. As with most commemorative dates, the institution of Amazon Day in 2007 aimed to draw attention to the care and demands of this region, which is essential for the country, but also for the planet.
As was widely disseminated throughout the three days of The Amazon and New Economies International Conference, held from August 31st to September 1st in Belém (PA), the conservation of the Amazon forest is essential for controlling the climate crisis and protecting life on the planet, including humanity.
The debates during the conference will not be confined to the auditorium of the Hangar Convention & Trade Fair Center. The Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) will continue the mobilization started at the Conference. To the CEO of IBRAM, Raul Jungmann spoke about the commemorative date. “Amazon Day reinforces in all of us our commitment to transforming the socio-environmental reality of the region, ensuring better living conditions for the millions of Brazilians who live there, but also for the more than 8 billion people who inhabit this small blue dot. and they need the Amazon to continue existing.”
In all debates, traditional people and communities, businesspeople, political leaders and academics were unanimous in defending the urgency of rethinking the current economic model in the region, seeking to equalize economic and social development. To this end, bioeconomies present themselves as an efficient solution, capable of generating income for the population while ensuring the maintenance of the forest standing in all its diversity and richness.
Another point that was highlighted during the Conference was the collective responsibility in building a green economy for the region. “This is not an exclusive responsibility of governments or environmental organizations, but of all of us human beings who inhabit this planet. As the 8th Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon, rightly recalled, there is no Planet B and it is up to us to strive to save the Earth. And there is no doubt that saving our planet necessarily involves saving the Amazon.”
