President of Colombia Comes to Brazil to Debate the Future of the Amazon
Iván Duque will participate in the International Conference Amazonia and New Economies, in Belém
The President of Colombia (2018-2022), Iván Duque, will be the featured speaker on the third and final day of The Amazon and New Economies International Conference, in Belém (PA), in August 30th to September 1st. With 42% of its territory formed by the Amazon rainforest, Colombia faces challenges similar to those of Brazil regarding the adoption of a green agenda that facilitates the socioeconomic development of the region and the conservation of the forest.
Duque presided over Colombia from 2018 to 2022, during which time he sought to foster international cooperation to protect the Amazon. With the discourse that protecting the forest is a moral duty of the countries that shelter it, his government focused on initiatives such as the development of sustainable production chains and the promotion of ecotourism in the region.
In addition to the Colombian president, the presence of global leaders such as the 8th Secretary General of the UN, Ban Kin-moon; ICMM President Rohitesh Dhawan; the UNESCO Ambassador for Sustainability, Oskar Metsavaht; Neidinha Suruí, Brazilian activist at the Kanindé Ethno-environmental Defense Association, as well as representatives of forest peoples, civil society, academia, public and private sectors.
Among the topics to be discussed by the participants are: new economies, bioeconomy, circular economy, strategic minerals, carbon market, solidarity economy, ESG, fight against environmental crimes, among others. Throughout the Conference, the focus will be on finding solutions to keep the forest standing and collaborate with building a Green Agenda for the economic transition.

The Amazon and New Economies International Conference is promoted by the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) a non-profit organization that brings together more than 130 companies and institutions that work in the Mineral sector and are committed to protecting the Amazon.
